Partial dentures, also known as partials, are a restorative treatment option for your missing teeth. As opposed to full or complete dentures, they are used to replace a few missing teeth in your upper or lower jaw. We may recommend partials if you are suffering from severe tooth decay, periodontal disease, a jaw or facial injury, or have a tooth extracted because of any reason.
Typically, partial dentures are removable, and they comprise false teeth, a gum-colored base, and metal or plastic clasps. In some cases, these dentures may be fixed to your mouth or take a permanent shape.
We will recommend removable partial dentures if you have some natural teeth in your mouth. They have three types.
They are the most common removable partial denture comprising false teeth and a gum-colored acrylic base. Your denture base is held in place with two or more metal clasps. These dentures are lightweight and stable. If you take proper care of these dentures, they do not allow the build-up of plaque.
They are made using flexible plastic material and produce high aesthetic results because they blend perfectly with your gum tissue and natural teeth. You can opt for them if you are allergic to acrylic. They require extreme care and maintenance because, once broken or cracked, such flexible partial dentures cannot be repaired.
We recommend them as a temporary option comprising plastic replacement teeth, removable acrylic base, as well as optional metal clasps. It is the least effective of all but more comfortable than cast metal partial dentures.
They are also known as fixed bridges. As the name suggests, they cannot be removed after being inserted into your jawbone.
They are made using ceramic, all-metal, or porcelain fused to metal. They include one or more artificial teeth and two dental crowns on either side to hold the bridge in place.
Similar to a traditional bridge, it supports the artificial teeth from one side only.
It is made using gold or porcelain and has wings that bond to the adjacent teeth, keeping the arrangement stable.
They are supported by dental implants and are an ideal option for patients with three or more missing back teeth.
Just like your natural teeth, you should brush your partials every day. Remove them while brushing and then dry them properly before wearing the removable partials again. Make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
