Tooth Extraction in Hayward CA

Tooth Extraction in Hayward CA

Tooth extraction is the complete removal of a tooth. A dental extraction may be required due to severe infection or tooth decay. One or two teeth may need to be removed when getting braces to create room for the other teeth as they shift into their proper orthodontic places. An extraction may be recommended to remove the tooth/teeth that have become severely damaged due to external trauma.

Tooth extraction is a fast outpatient surgery that can be done under local, general, intravenous, or a combination of the anesthetic by an oral surgeon or a general dentist. Extraction can be done in two ways- simple or surgical. The surgical process is required for teeth that are fractured, below the surface, or impacted.

How to Prepare for an Extraction?

You should disclose to us any medications, supplements, or over-the-counter drugs that you take on your first appointment itself. Inform us beforehand if you suffer from any of the following medical conditions:

  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid
  • Lung infection
  • Hypertension
  • An artificial joint
  • An impaired immune system
  • Damaged heart valves

We always make sure that your condition is stable before undergoing tooth extraction. The following things must be kept in mind on the day of your extraction:

  • Don’t eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before your appointment if you are undergoing a surgical extraction.
  • Bring someone along with you who will drive you home after the procedure.
  • Do not smoke or consume alcohol before the procedure.
  • If you have had vomiting or nausea a night before or on the day of your appointment, inform your dentist so that they adjust your anesthesia dosage.

Procedure

  • Simple Extraction

In a simple extraction, you’ll be given local anesthesia that will numb the area around the tooth that needs to be removed. An elevator and forceps will be used to first loosen the tooth from its socket and then extract it. You may feel slight pressure during the procedure but no pain whatsoever.

  • Surgical Extraction

You will most likely be given both local and intravenous anesthetics, making you feel peaceful and comfortable. A small incision will be made in your gum by the oral surgeon. Before your tooth is removed, they may need to remove the bone or gum around it. The tooth will then be removed in segments from its socket, and the gum will be stitched up.

You must take the prescribed medications after extraction and avoid anything that will obstruct regular recovery.
