A dental bone graft is performed to increase the amount of bone in a part of your jaw that has lost bone because of injury, decay, or other reason. We may also perform bone graft where additional support is required. This procedure is generally done before dental implant placement. We also do it when the loss of bone is affecting your neighboring teeth negatively.
A bone graft adds density and volume to your jaws. The material of the bone graft is taken from your body only. Sometimes, the material is also taken from a human tissue bank. In some cases, bone graft material is prepared artificially or synthetically.
Once we place a bone graft, it holds the space of your body to perform the repairing work. To put it more precisely, this procedure works like a scaffold on which your bone tissue starts growing and regenerating.
In some cases, we may combine this procedure with PRP or platelet-rich plasma to promote healing and regeneration of your tissues.
If you have lost the bone in your jaw, you can visit our clinic and opt for this procedure. We may also recommend bone grafting if you are getting your tooth extracted and during a dental implant procedure. Other instances where you may want to opt for bone grafting include rebuilding your jaw before dentures and periodontal disease.
We will numb the area of surgery using a local anesthetic and create a small incision in your gums. The tissues of your gum are moved back a little to make your jawbone visible. We will clean and disinfect the area and add the bone grafting material to restore the defect.
Most of the time, we cover the bone graft with a membrane to provide additional protection. At last, we reposition your gum tissue and close the incision with sutures.
It is normal to experience swelling, pain, and bruising after the procedure. You can manage these symptoms with a pain reliever. We will also give you antibiotics to keep any infection at bay. Take everything as prescribed.
During the first few days of the procedure, you will see some small fragments of bone coming out. It is not a cause of concern and heals with time.
